Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty:
Abdominal plastic and aesthetic surgery aims to refine the waist and restore a harmonious silhouette..

In order to find a “flat” stomach, different interventions can be considered: simple abdominoplasty (mini-abdominal) or extended abdominoplasty (abdominoplasty with transposition of the umbilicus).

The operating technique adopted by the surgeon depends on several parameters such as the condition of the skin, the importance of the excess fat, the tone of the abdominal muscles, the general morphology, the requests and expectations of the patient.

At the end of the intervention, a modeling dressing is made with the placement of a compression sheath.

The scars are carefully monitored during the weeks following the operation.

During the first two or three months following the operation, the scars appear pink. After the third month, they begin to fade, gradually over 1 to 3 years.

Proper healing depends on the patient's state of health and/or lifestyle. In some cases, this healing can be compromised, particularly in cases of obesity, diabetes, smoking, or poor personal hygiene.

  1. The wounds are cleaned and disinfected.
  2. As a general rule, the drainage system (presence of two redons) is removed according to the surgeon's instructions.
  3. Analgesics and anti-inflammatories are given during hospitalization and are prescribed for the return home.
  4. An appointment with the surgeon is planned to check the good evolution of the scars after the intervention.
  1. A support sheath is to be worn day and night for 2 to 4 weeks (according to the surgeon's recommendations).
  2. Showers are prohibited until the dressing is removed, baths, swimming, jacuzzi, prohibited for 4 weeks.
  3. All the classic gestures of daily life are authorized except the carrying of heavy loads (including young children) and sudden movements (cleaning in particular).
  4. The resumption of sport can be done from the 6th week following the intervention.
  5. Do not take medications containing aspirin.
  6. Avoid exposure to the sun directly on the scars.
  7. A two-week break is expected.

As with any surgery, zero risk does not exist and possible complications related to the surgery and the anesthesia may occur:

  • Hematoma,
  • An infection,
  • An effusion linked to a flow of lymph and an oozing of fat
  • Skin necrosis (especially in case of diabetes and smoking),
  • Alterations in the sensitivity of the abdominal wall,
  • Thromboembolic accidents such as phlebitis or pulmonary embolism (rare).

It is advisable to perform this type of intervention after pregnancy.

Note that it is also important to pay attention to large variations in weight so as not to alter the result of the intervention.

An abdominoplasty with transposition of the umbilicus (or extended abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure that consists of removing excess skin and fatty tissue located between the navel and the pubic area and tightening the healthy skin.

It can be supplemented, if necessary, by abdominal liposuction and/or tightening of the abdominal muscles, particularly in the event of diastasis, hernia, or eventration.

Performed by a surgeon under general anesthesia or locoregional anesthesia (spinal anesthesia or epidural), the duration of the intervention varies between 1h30 and 3 hours depending on the case.

The duration of hospitalization varies from 1 to 4 days.

The aesthetic result is visible between 3 to 6 months after the abdominoplasty.

After this type of intervention, patients are recommended to follow a healthy lifestyle (balanced diet and physical activity).

Abdominoplasty with transposition of the umbilicus is indicated in the event of significant skin lesions (scars, loss of tone and elasticity, significant stretch marks, distension of the skin, etc.), significant muscle relaxation, significant weight loss, successive pregnancies or sequelae of surgical interventions but also dissatisfaction with body image.

To benefit from this type of intervention, it is necessary to:

  • to have a good general state of health
  • record a stable weight
  • to expect a realistic result
  • to be at least 18 years old.

Warning: tobacco can cause serious skin, respiratory or cardiac complications.

It is recommended to completely stop smoking at least one month before the intervention and then until complete healing.

Respecting these instructions is an important element in terms of the final aesthetic success.

Abdominoplasty is an extended abdominoplasty which consists of removing a large portion of skin located between the umbilicus and the pubis.

The skin located above the navel is then “re-draped” downwards in order to reconstitute an abdominal wall with good quality skin.

During this surgery, excess fat can be removed by liposuction and the distended muscles put back in tension.

Two incisions are made:

  1. An incision at the level of the implantation of the pubic hair (suprapubic transverse scar). This is more or less long depending on the size and location of the skin removed.
  2. An incision around the umbilicus (peri-umbilical circular scar).
