Blepharoplasty

What is eyelid aesthetics (blepharoplasty)?
Eyelid aesthetics or blepharoplasty is a set of surgical procedures performed by a plastic surgeon to remove sagging skin and excess muscle tissue and stretch the tissues around the eye, applied to the lower and upper eyelids.

With advancing age, sagging naturally occurs on the skin with the effect of gravity. Along with this process, signs such as bagging in the eyelids, sagging skin, discoloration, sagging and wrinkles occur. Factors such as sun exposure, air pollution, irregular sleep, excessive smoking and alcohol consumption accelerate the aging process of the skin.

What are the signs of aging eyelids?
The skin normally has an elastic structure. However, as we age, its elasticity gradually decreases. Due to loss of elasticity in facial skin, excess skin first accumulates on the eyelids. For this reason, the first signs of aging appear on the eyelids. The age-related changes that occur in the eyelids cause a tired, dull and old appearance in the person. Some of the signs of aging seen in the lower and upper eyelids;

  1. Bagging and discoloration under the eyes.
  2. Drooping upper eyelid.
  3. Wrinkles and sagging eyelid skin.
  4. Crow's feet lines at the corners of the eyes.

It can be listed as a tired facial expression.

The enlargement of the skin that occurs in the eyelids causes a droopy upper eyelid. This weakness can sometimes be too great to prevent vision. In this case, this condition must be treated functionally. Sometimes droopy eyebrows and forehead are accompanied by droopy eyelids. In this case, there is an aesthetically worse appearance.

For those who wish to undergo blepharoplasty for aesthetic or functional reasons, only the upper eyelid or the lower eyelid can be aestheticized, or both can be applied together. Blepharoplasty is often performed along with brow lift, forehead lift, and endoscopic midface surgeries.

How old is eyelid aesthetics (blepharoplasty)?
Eyelid aesthetics are mainly performed by people over the age of 35. Because eyelid aging signs often start to appear after these ages. However, it is possible for anyone in medical need to do so at any age. Surgery cannot stop the continued aging of the eyelids; but it lasts 7-8 years. After the operation, the person's tired facial expression is replaced by a lively and calm appearance..

What should be considered before eyelid aesthetics (blepharoplasty)?
The use of medications such as aspirin and antibiotics should be discontinued at least 15 days before the procedure due to the risk of increasing bleeding tendency during the operation. The use of cigarettes and other tobacco products should also be stopped 2-3 weeks before, as they delay wound healing. Herbal supplements should not be taken during this time as they may cause unexpected effects.

How aesthetics of the upper eyelids?
Upper eyelid aesthetics or lower eyelid surgery is briefly the process of cutting and removing excess skin and muscle tissue in the area. An incision is

performed on the crease line of the eyelid so that the surgical scar is not visible. It gives better cosmetic results when applied with forehead and eyebrow lifting operations.

How the aesthetics of the lower eyelids?
The fat pads positioned on the cheekbones when young are moved downwards by gravity with the aging process. This situation causes signs of aging in the form of sagging under the lower eyelid and deepening of the laugh lines at the edge.
The aesthetic procedure for this fat pad is done endoscopically by suspending the pads in place. This application is done before any operation on the lower eyelid.

After suspending the fat pads in place, it may not be necessary to perform an operation on the lower eyelid. The lower eyelid is reassessed to see if there is any puffiness and sagging. If these findings are still unresolved, lower eyelid surgery is started. The surgical incision is made just below the eyelashes. The skin is lifted and the fat is smeared in the hollow of the eye, the excess skin and muscle is cut away and the procedure is complete. If the collapse under the eye continues after surgery, an oil injection under the eye may be needed after healing.
